永恒主义感知 可以描述为经历一个人对时间从过去到现在再到未来的线性连续性背后的基本机制的看法的重大改变。在这种精神状态下，感觉好像存在的整个时间轴上的所有点都是同等“真实”的，并且彼此同时发生。每一个时间点都被感觉到是存在的，无论该人目前在整个时间轴中的位置如何，就像物理空间中的所有点都存在，无论观察者的位置如何。然而，重要的是要理解，这些结论和感觉不应被表面上接受为本质上的真理。
虽然所有时刻都被感觉为同样真实，但时间的方向性流动被感觉为得以维持，现在总是当前经历的时刻。所有时间点仍然被感觉为通过因果关系联系在一起，过去是现在的必要条件，现在是未来的必要条件，依此类推。
在经历这种状态时得出的一个常见结论是，尽管一个人的生命不可避免地会结束，但它显然会在自己的时间范围内永远持续下去，因此尽管它的长度不是无限的，但它是永恒的。因此，生与死仅仅是一个人永恒存在的（如果不是永恒经历的）时间范围的起点和终点。
这种视角的突然改变与标准的时间感知形成鲜明对比，在标准的时间感知中，只有现在被感觉到是存在的，而过去不再存在，未来尚未到来。
永恒主义感知通常伴随着其他同时发生的超个人效应，如联合与互联和相互依存的对立感。它最常在严重剂量的迷幻剂化合物的影响下被诱发，如LSD、赛洛西宾和麦斯卡林。
